About Dr Michael Karpa
Dr. Michael Karpa is a highly skilled comprehensive ophthalmologist with extensive expertise in laser, cataract, glaucoma, and oculoplastic surgery. Additionally, he specialises in the management of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and Botox treatments. Dr. Karpa completed a Bachelor of Science degree with first-class honours from James Cook University in Townsville, where he majored in Chemistry and Biochemistry. He furthered his research pursuits in molecular recognition chemistry at various institutions, including James Cook University, Monash University in Australia, and the University of Notre Dame in the United States. After completing Medical School at Flinders University, Dr. Karpa underwent registrar training at the Sydney Eye Hospital. He then pursued two ophthalmology fellowships, the first with the Fred Hollows Foundation in remote Australia, Fiji, and Vanuatu, and the second at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust in the United Kingdom. Following these fellowships, he completed additional training in oculoplastics and glaucoma at the King’s College Hospital in London. Dr. Karpa is actively involved in basic science and clinical research, with numerous international peer-reviewed publications covering a range of topics, including synthetic, organic, and molecular recognition chemistry, as well as sensory impairment and eye disease. He earned a PhD in Medicine from the University of Sydney for his work on The Blue Mountains Eye Study, which focused on the impacts of visual and sensory impairments on older individuals. Dr Karpa is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO). He is committed to providing the highest standard of eye care and surgical interventions to his patients. Dr. Karpa is associated with Best Practice Eyecare, a leading ophthalmology practice located in Golden Beach on the Sunshine Coast.
