About

Mr Liam Convie is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with specialist expertise in colorectal cancer, diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease.

He graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2011, achieving distinctions in every phase of the undergraduate medical programme and being awarded the Magrath Medal in Surgery. Mr Convie completed his core and higher surgical training in Northern Ireland before undertaking the prestigious Overseas Colorectal Surgery Fellowship at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Queensland, Australia. During this fellowship he gained extensive experience in advanced laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery, including pelvic exenteration for patients with locally advanced or recurrent pelvic malignancy.

Mr Convie is fully trained in open, laparoscopic and robotic colorectal procedures and has particular clinical interests in the management of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis and perianal conditions such as haemorrhoids, fistulas and fissures. Upon returning to the UK, he was appointed as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald.

He welcomes all general surgical referrals, particularly those related to gastrointestinal and perianal symptoms including pain, bleeding, altered bowel habit, incontinence and abdominal discomfort.

Mr Convie has a strong interest in surgical education and training. He holds a Master’s degree in Medical Education and is faculty on multiple national surgical training courses. He also maintains active research interests and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Queen’s University Belfast for his work on informed consent in surgery.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
