Prof Jonathan Hourihane is a consultant paediatrician. They specialise in children with allergic conditions. They are considered one of the world's leading paediatric allergists. Their research interests focus on the exploration of the link between skin barrier dysfunction and systemic allergic disorders. They are also interested in the threshold doses of food allergens, immunomodulation of established allergic responses, prevention of allergic sensitisation and evaluation of quality of life in food allergic children.
They are at the forefront of recent and ongoing studies of oral and epicutaneous immunotherapy for peanut allergy. They are a founding member of the Clemens von Pirquet Foundation and the Irish Food Allergy Network (IFAN). They are also President of the Irish Association of Allergy and Immunology and a Board member of the National Children's Research Centre, Dublin.
