About Mr Ivor Vanhegan
Mr. Ivor Vanhegan is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon renowned for his expertise in hip surgery. Dedicated to improving patient experiences and outcomes, Mr. Vanhegan combines extensive clinical knowledge with an impressive academic background to provide highly specialised, patient-centred care. His particular interests lie in optimising recovery after joint replacement surgery, with an exceptional track record in facilitating same-day discharge for his patients. Born and educated in London, Mr. Vanhegan completed his higher surgical training on the prestigious North-West Thames rotation at Imperial College Healthcare. He earned his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2018, followed by three distinguished fellowships in Oxford, Reading, and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore. These roles deepened his expertise in primary and revision joint replacement and young adult hip surgery (hip preservation). In recognition of his abilities, Mr. Vanhegan was awarded the coveted British Hip Society Fellowship, which provided international exposure to advanced joint replacement techniques in Chicago and Vancouver. In his NHS role, Mr. Vanhegan manages a wide spectrum of lower limb conditions, including hip preservation, joint replacement, and trauma. As the Clinical Lead for hip fracture management, his contributions have been integral to developing one of the nation’s top-rated services. He is also deeply involved in the treatment of orthopaedic infections, serving as part of his local Bone Infection Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and a member of the European Bone & Joint Infection Society (EBJIS). A respected medicolegal expert, Mr. Vanhegan provides opinions on clinical negligence cases related to hip surgery and prepares high-quality personal injury reports. Mr. Vanhegan’s academic achievements include a First-Class BSc and an MD(Res) from University College London, both focusing on hip replacement design. His research contributions have earned numerous national and international accolades, including the prestigious WJ Little Medal from the Seddon Society. He has authored an extensive portfolio of peer-reviewed publications, served as a journal reviewer, and acted as Principal Investigator in clinical trials. Beyond his clinical and academic accomplishments, Mr. Vanhegan is an enthusiastic educator. As a Surgical Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons, he oversees surgical training within his hospital as part of the Wessex Deanery. He contributes to interview panels, training committees, and appraisals, and he has mentored many doctors in training. Mr. Vanhegan is a proud member of the British Orthopaedic Association, British Hip Society, Hip Preservation Society (ISHA), and European Bone & Joint Infection Society.
