Dr Petersen has also spent extensive time training at a specialist facial pain service at the Eastman Dental Institute and is experienced in the treatment of oral soft tissue conditions such as ulcers and lichen planus. She has a special interest in pre-orthodontic surgery, which includes the removal/exposure of impacted teeth, including canines and supernumeries.
Dr Petersen is the current lead for the paediatric oral surgery service and clinical lead for oral surgery within the Manchester Foundation Trust where she works closely as part of a multidisciplinary team to manage her patients' conditions. Dr Petersen is also a valued member of the Manchester Hypodontia team which takes on patients who have particularly complex dental needs.
Dr Petersen is dedicated to her patients and has achieved two awards in clinical excellence for performing above and beyond the duties of her role. She also has a passion for research and was previously awarded a research training fellowship from the Wellcome Trust in order to complete her PhD. Dr Petersen has had her research published in journals and has presented her work internationally. In addition, she currently holds the position of Editor-in-Chief for the international journal, 'Oral Surgery'.
Dr Petersen also has an interest in medical education and is an accredited senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Academy of Medical Educators. She delivers lectures at the University of Manchester where she is the Programme Director for the Masters degree course in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr Petersen is also an invited examiner for the Overseas Registration Examination and a council member of the British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS).
