About Dr Emer McGilloway
Dr Emer McGilloway completed her medical degree at Queen's University Belfast where she graduated with Distinction. She, began her career at the Royal Victoria Hospital Belfast. She then practised as a Neurology registrar at Beaumont, St Vincent's, and St James's hospitals in Dublin. Following this, she relocated to London for further training in Rehabilitation Medicine at King's College Hospital, the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability, and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore. In 2010, Dr McGilloway joined the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court as the Lead Consultant for neuro-rehabilitation and subject matter expert for the Ministry of Defence. By 2015, she was the Clinical Lead for neurological and trauma rehabilitation at King's College Hospital. There, she spearheaded a successful initiative to increase the number of inpatient neurorehabilitation beds in South East London, effectively doubling the available provision. Dr McGilloway represents London in the National Clinical Reference Group for Disability and Rehabilitation and has chaired the national clinical pathway development group for spinal injury. Recently, she was named a Topic Adviser to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), focusing on national guidelines for chronic neurological disorder rehabilitation. Additionally, she serves as a consultant adviser to the Rugby Football Union Injured Players Foundation, with a particular focus on traumatic brain injury. Outside of medicine, Dr McGilloway has a passion for opera and theatre. She is an alumna of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio, having worked as a professional opera singer for several years. Her career in opera included soloist roles with Opera North, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera, and Glyndebourne.
