About Prof Daniel Blackman
Professor Dan Blackman MBChB (Honours), MD, MRCP Consultant Cardiologist, Department of Cardiology, Leeds General Infirmary Professor of Interventional Cardiology, University of Leeds Professor Dan Blackman graduated with honours from the University of Birmingham in 1992. After undertaking basic medical training in Cambridge and a period of dedicated research towards his MD in Cardiff, he completed his cardiology training in Oxford, complemented by a one-year interventional fellowship at Toronto General Hospital. Professor Blackman was appointed as an Interventional Cardiologist at Leeds General Infirmary in 2005. He was made Professor of Interventional cardiology at the University of Leeds in 2022. Professor Blackman has interest and expertise across the full spectrum of heart disease, and sees patients with chest pain, breathlessness, palpitation, dizziness, and blackouts. His sub-specialist area is interventional cardiology, including both coronary intervention and valve intervention. He is recognized as one of the leading interventional cardiologists in the UK, and has an international reputation in the field of trans-catheter valve intervention, including TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation), and trans-catheter mitral valve intervention. Professor Blackman has been a member of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society Council from 2012-2024, having been Honorary Secretary from 2016-2020. Currently he is Chair of the BCIS Structural Heart Group, as well as being a member of the British Heart Valve Society Council, the NHS England Heart Valve Disease Expert Advisory Group, the NHS England Device Working Group, and the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Intervention (EAPCI) Training & Education Group. Professor Blackman has trained doctors across the world in TAVI, and regularly lectures at national and international conferences. He is currently a member of the programme committee for the European PCR Valves and EuroPCR conferences. Professor Blackman leads a major research programme in interventional cardiology in Leeds, and has published over 150 papers in peer-review journals. He is a member of the BCIS Structural Research Committee, and Professor of Interventional Cardiology at the University of Leeds. Outside work, his major loves are his family, his labrador, and sport in all its forms. He continues to play hockey for Boston Spa 2nd XI intermittently, and golf more frequently but very badly.
