Trained in paediatric respiratory medicine, he has held consultant roles in Melbourne, Australia, Cardiff, UK, and Doha, Qatar, and has specialised in both General and Emergency Paediatrics.
His research has centred on clinical trials in general and paediatric emergency medicine, and he has served on numerous international and national research committees and networks. He established and led the GAPRUKI national research network and was a founding member of the PERUKI network. In addition to his research leadership, Professor Powell has been instrumental in medical education, developing and leading undergraduate and postgraduate training programmes, as well as overseeing curriculum design, course delivery, examination setting, benchmarking, and assessment for the Universities of Manchester, Sheffield, Melbourne, and Cardiff. He has also served as an external examiner for Lancaster, Warwick, University College London, Monash University, and the University of Melbourne.
Professor Powell has examined for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, and the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons. His leadership roles have included Welsh Academic Representative for the Academic Paediatric Association (APA), Welsh representative for the RCPCH Executive Committee and National Training Committee, and Welsh Deanery ARCP postgraduate trainee assessor. He has also served as Chair of the BAGP.
Currently, he is Editor (PEM) and Associate Editor of Archives of Disease in Childhood (ADC), where he also serves as Lucina and the Archivist. He is a chair or member of three Independent Data Monitoring Committees/Trial Steering Committees, leads a systematic review group in Qatar collaborating with the World Health Organisation’s clinical guidelines development team, and holds an Honorary Chair at the School of Medicine, Cardiff University.
