Dr Catherine Mathews is an experienced Consultant Rheumatologist at The Blackheath Hospital with extensive expertise in addressing a wide spectrum of musculoskeletal diseases in both adults and children.

Dr Mathews completed her medical degree at the University of Cambridge in 1995, and undertook her specialist rheumatology training in London. She entered the General Medical Council (GMC) specialist register for rheumatology in 2006 and has been practicing as a consultant since. She currently leads her local rheumatology department and fosters close professional connections with numerous experts in their field, allowing her to provide comprehensive, interdisciplinary care to her patients.

At The Blackheath Hospital, she sees patients with a wide range of conditions that can cause joint or muscle problems including inflammatory arthritis, vasculitis, gout, back and neck conditions, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, shoulder impingement, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel syndrome, calcium crystal diseases, giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica. Dr Mathews has a clinical network with the Evelina Children’s Hospital, where she manages a diverse range of conditions that can young individuals, ranging from hypermobility to complex arthritis.

Dr Mathews holds the role of senior hospital director, where she oversees the training of medical students and trainee doctors across multiple specialties. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a past President of the Rheumatology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine,  and has several publications. Notably, she has played a pivotal role in authoring national guidelines for the treatment of common rheumatological conditions.
