About Dr Athanasios Tsoumpris
Dr Athanasios (Thanos) Tsoumpris is a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in general adult and perinatal mental health, with additional expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of adult ADHD. He currently works with the Lambeth Perinatal Mental Health Team at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and has worked in the Adult ADHD Service at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL). Dr Tsoumpris has over a decade of experience within the NHS, having completed his psychiatric training at both SLaM and the East London NHS Foundation Trust. Since 2019, he has practised as a consultant psychiatrist, providing comprehensive care for a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and psychotic disorders. He works with patients managing mental health challenges related to pregnancy and the postnatal period, including the perinatal management of adult ADHD. In context of his expertise within perinatal mental health he is also able to provide specialist preconception counselling consultations. These consultations are for individuals who have history of mental health difficulties who wish to conceive, and individualised recommendations are made for the management of their mental health in the remaining of the preconception period and in a future pregnancy. In addition to his psychiatric qualifications, Dr Tsoumpris is trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, enhancing his expertise in complex case formulation and holistic patient care. As a GMC-accredited clinical and educational supervisor, Dr Tsoumpris trains and mentors psychiatry residents. He has contributed to the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Perinatal Faculty, supporting service development and clinical improvement. His current research at SLaM focuses on bipolar disorder in the perinatal period and the long-term outcomes of postpartum psychosis.
