About Dr Arul Suthananthan
Dr Arul Edward Suthananthan is a specialist surgeon in liver transplant, hepato-pancreatico-biliary (HPB) and general surgery, with expertise in both open and advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) procedures. His clinical practice includes surgery for gallbladder disease, hernia repair, liver resection and pancreatic surgery, with a particular focus on complex HPB conditions. Dr Suthananthan completed his general surgical training in Perth and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2018. He then undertook extensive subspecialty training in liver transplant and HPB surgery across Perth, Brisbane and Birmingham in the UK, and is a fellowship member of the Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Association (AANZHPBA). Following completion of his training, he worked as a consultant surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, the largest HPB and liver transplant unit in Europe. He has since returned to Perth, where he is affiliated with the WA Liver and Kidney Transplant Unit at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and practises privately at St John of God Subiaco and St John of God Murdoch. Dr Suthananthan has a special interest in the surgical management of liver and pancreatic cancers. He takes a highly individualised approach to patient care, combining the latest clinical evidence with modern surgical techniques to achieve the best possible outcomes for each patient.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
