Mr Ahmed Alani is a Senior Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow and the Glasgow Colorectal Centre - based at Ross Hall Hospital.
He has been the Clinical Lead of the Colorectal Robotic Assisted Surgery for Colorectal cancer in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital since its establishment in 2021. Beyond clinical work, his interests also lie in academia and teaching with Mr Alani holding a role as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, School of Medicine.
He graduated with Honours in 1994 and went on to complete his early surgical training in Ireland, before subsequently moving to Glasgow where he completed his higher surgical training and became a Consultant General and Colorectal surgeon in 2011. After completion of his training, Mr Alani undertook the prestigious Ethicon fellowship in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery in 2010. Thereafter, he secured a highly competitive position on a travelling fellowship to the renowned Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, where he had the unique opportunity to observe advanced and complex open, laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery.
During his training, he also carried out clinical research and was awarded a Medical Doctorate (MD) Higher degree in Hernia Surgery from The University of Glasgow in 2008.
Mr Alani specialises in the Robotic management of colon and rectal conditions including bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and diverticular disease.
He also manages a wide variety of colorectal conditions including faecal incontinence, constipation and rectal prolapse. Mr Alani specialises in the management of all perianal conditions such as anal abscess and fistula surgery, pilonidal disease, anal skin tags/ warts, acute anal fissures and piles/haemorrhoids amongst others.
Beyond the aforementioned, Mr Alani also performs diagnostic, therapeutic and bowel cancer screening colonoscopies within the NHS. He has further interests in therapeutic colonoscopy to remove large polyps, dilate colonic strictures and treat radiation proctitis.
He has a portfolio accruing over 600 cancer resection of which 150 have been robotic, alongside 4000 colonoscopies over the past 20 years, which is testament to Mr Alani’s extensive clinical experience and skill.
He specialises in hernia surgery and has an interest in the management of all hernias, and has the ability to undertake both open and minimally invasive approaches.
