Dr. Filippos Georgopoulos holds licences to practise medicine in Dubai (Dubai Health Authority), the UK (General Medical Council), and Greece (Athens Medical Council). He is also a Fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (FEBGH)
Dr.Filippos Georgopoulos after completion of his basic training in Gastroenterology in 2000 in Athens, he subspecialized in Interventional Therapeutic Endoscopy, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in United Kingdom where he also became a Consultant at the same department up to mid-2003. He became a Fellow of the European Board of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (FEBGH) in 2008. He is also an active European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO) and Emirates Gastroenterology and Hepatology Society member.
Prior to joining Al Zahra Hospital Dr. Georgopoulos worked as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in a tertiary Hospital in Athens, Greece which was a regional Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) center. He has a special interest in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease) serving in the advisory board of the Emirates Gastroenterology Association for the arrangement of UAE national guidelines for IBD management. He has also a special interest in eosinophilic esophagitis actively participating in the development of UAE national guidelines regarding diagnosis and treatment of it.
In addition he has extensive experience in advanced therapeutic endoscopy (ERCP, Endoscopic Mucosal resection EMR of large colonic or gastric polyps, percutaneous endoscopic placement of gastrostomy feeding tubes, dilatation of strictures, placement of various digestive metal stents, and endoscopic band ligation of esophageal varices). He has been one of the pioneers in the usage of capsule endoscopy for the examination of the small intestine since invention of it. He also one of the very few who performs and interprets esophageal manometry and 24 hrs pH study for diagnosis of esophageal motility disorders, like achalasia, and 24 hrs pH study for diagnosis and treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux disease.
He has published multiple studies in interventional endoscopy and IBD and is frequently invited in multiple local and international meetings regarding IBD and interventional endoscopy.
He practice at Al Zahra Hospital Dubai where he serves as the Head of the Gastroenterology Department and Endoscopic Unit and at Health Bay Polyclinic
