About

Mr Alex Baneke is a leading Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in cataract and glaucoma surgery. He studied medicine at Oxford University and University College London before his ophthalmic specialty training, the majority of which was based at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He completed an 18-month fellowship in surgical glaucoma at Moorfields, gaining extensive experience in managing both routine and complex cases of glaucoma and cataract.

Alongside his clinical training, Mr Baneke completed a research fellowship in glaucoma at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, publishing internationally in the field. His research interests focus on advancing understanding and treatment approaches for glaucoma.

Mr Baneke is leading transformative changes to the delivery of NHS glaucoma care in Mid and South Essex, more than halving the waiting list for patients over the past 3 years. He currently leads fellowships at Southend and Orsett hospitals, where he is actively involved in training ophthalmic surgeons in cataract and glaucoma surgery. Through this role, he supports the development of future specialists and contributes to the continued advancement of ophthalmic surgery in the UK.

Outside of work, Mr Baneke lives with his wife and two small children in Essex. When he has time he enjoys long bike rides in the British countryside or relaxing with a good book and a coffee in the garden.

With extensive training at world-renowned institutions and significant clinical and research expertise, Mr Baneke provides caring, comprehensive care for patients requiring surgical and medical management of cataract and glaucoma.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”

— Mr Alex Baneke
