Miss Poorna Abeysiri is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust where she provides a General Ophthalmology service and specialist services in cataract and glaucoma.
She has 14 years of service as an NHS consultant and 27 years experience in the NHS and extensive experience in cataract and glaucoma surgery. She trained in centres across the UK including Moorfields Eye Hospital and The Western Eye Hospital.
Ms Abeysiri is a Senior Clinical Lecturer for UCL. She has held post with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists as College Tutor, Regional Advisor and Fellowship Examiner and is the Clinical Lead for Glaucoma at her trust.
She undertakes all forms of cataract surgery including refractive cataract surgery for reduction of spectacle dependence, complex cataract surgery using extra-capsular and intra-capsular techniques and high volume cataract surgery. She also performs forms of glaucoma surgery including trabeculectomy filtration surgery and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) as well as YAG iridotomy. She also offers Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) as first-line treatment for glaucoma, to reduce dependence on eyedrops and peripheral iridotomy.
Ms Abeysiri is also experienced in YAG laser capsulotomy to clear the lens implant.
She manages all common eye conditions such as floaters, dry eyes, ocular surface disease and blepharitis and undertakes minor operations of the eyelids such as surgery on lid cysts.
She has a strong focus on surgery and clinical care, regularly audits her work and her surgical results compare well with national averages, with excellent patient satisfaction.
