About

Mr took up his post as a NHS Consultant General and Bariatric Surgeon in August 2014 having completed his surgical training in the North East, benefitting from being present at Sunderland Royal Hospital when bariatric surgery became an accepted NHS treatment for morbid obesity and during which time Sunderland became the busiest NHS bariatric centre in the country. Whilst he developed expertise in all areas of benign upper gastro-intestinal Surgery (hernia surgery, gallbladder surgery) his focus has been delivering high quality, safe laparoscopic surgery for the conditions he manages with a patient centred focus.

He regularly attends and presents at national and international bariatric meetings, contributing to research papers and presentations.

His General Surgery practice specialises in laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and laparoscopic and open hernia surgery, including inguinal, ventral, umbilical and incisional hernia. He has an interest in performing acute (or HOT) gallbladder surgery for patients admitted as an emergency with acute gallstone infections and performs laparoscopic bile duct surgery when required.

He perform laparoscopic antireflux surgery and has an interest in surgery for patients with symptomatic giant para-oesophageal hernias.

As a Bariatric Surgeon he specialises in minimally invasive procedures to aid weight loss and improve obesity related comorbidities. He performs endoscopic gastric balloon insertion, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic Roux en Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic loop/mini gastric bypass. In addition he performs Metabolic Surgery (for diabetes) on patients with a BMI of 30-35Kg/m2 in accordance with NICE guidelines. He also perform revisional/conversional procedures when previous operations have not been successful.

Since starting as a consultant in 2014 he has performed over 300 primary laparoscopic bariatric procedures (gastric bypass and sleeve) and more complex revisional cases (converting gastric bands to alternative procedures) in addition to performing gallbladder and hernia surgery on a weekly basis.

He has addtional roles as Clinical Governance lead for General Surgery and as a honorary undergraduate lecturer for medical student education at Newcastle University.

He is a member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society and sits on their patient safety committe. He also teaches on Royal College of Surgeons courses and runs Bariatric surgery course at Sunderland Royal Hospital for qualified surgeons wanting to gain experience of Bariatric surgery and the loop gastric bypass. He also run a Royal College of Surgeons approved fellowship program to train senior trainees in bariatric surgery.
