About Prof Matthew Read
Prof. Matthew Read is an experienced general and upper gastrointestinal surgeon based at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Fitzroy. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Hons) from Monash University (2003) and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2017. His clinical expertise centres on minimally invasive and robotic surgery, with a subspecialty focus on oesophago-gastric and bariatric procedures. Following his general surgical fellowship, Prof. Read completed advanced training through the Australian and New Zealand Gastro-Oesophageal Surgery Association (ANZGOSA) at St Vincent’s and The Alfred Hospitals in Melbourne. He later undertook a surgical oncology fellowship at the University Medical Center in Utrecht, the Netherlands, under Prof Richard van Hillegersberg, refining his skills in robotic surgery. Prof. Read recently completed a PhD with the University of Melbourne and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, researching preclinical models of oesophageal cancer and Barrett’s oesophagus. His work has resulted in multiple publications, awards, and international collaborations. He now serves as a Senior Lecturer Fellow with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, sits on the advisory board of OESO, and represents younger fellows on the Academia Surgical Committee, reflecting his commitment to advancing surgical science and education.
