About Mr Alistair Sharples
Mr Alistair Sharples is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon with specialist expertise in Bariatric Surgery and Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstruction. He practises privately at Rowley Hall Hospital, Staffordshire, and holds an NHS consultant post at University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) — one of the largest and most specialist teaching hospital trusts in the country. Mr Sharples graduated in Medicine from the University of Manchester in 2006 and completed higher surgical training in the West Midlands. He subsequently undertook advanced fellowship training in both the UK and Canada, specialising in Upper GI, Bariatric and Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery, with focused experience in complex metabolic surgery, revisional foregut procedures and abdominal wall reconstruction. He also holds a Master’s degree in Trauma Science from Queen Mary University of London and a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Dundee, reflecting his continued academic involvement and commitment to surgical training. At UHNM, Mr Sharples manages both elective and emergency general surgical cases and is involved in the care of complex regional referrals. In addition to comprehensive general surgery, he has particular expertise in: • Complex abdominal wall hernias, including large, recurrent and incisional defects • Primary and revisional bariatric surgery • Advanced anti-reflux and revisional reflux procedures • Management of complications and long-term sequelae of previous upper GI and metabolic operations He frequently assesses and treats patients requiring corrective or reconstructive surgery following prior abdominal procedures, providing careful multidisciplinary evaluation, optimisation and long-term follow-up where required. Mr Sharples is highly experienced in both open and advanced laparoscopic techniques, with a strong emphasis on safe, evidence-based and minimally invasive surgery. His core specialist procedures include: • Complex abdominal wall reconstruction and hernia repair • Primary and revisional bariatric (metabolic) surgery • Primary and revisional anti-reflux surgery • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy He has published peer-reviewed research in his field and remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of surgical safety and patient outcomes.
