Er ist außerdem einer der wenigen zertifizierten Knorpel-Spezialisten in Deutschland und behandelt durch Sportunfälle verursachte Knorpelschäden an Hüfte und Kniegelenken. Weiter, ist Dr. Steens einer der wenigen Chirurgen in Europa, der im Jahr bis zu 200 "PSI Knie Prothesen" implantiert. PSI steht für "Patient-specific Instruments", ein innovatives System, das Chirurgen erlaubt, jedes Implantat perfekt an individuelle Patienten anzupassen.
