Mr Tamhankar has a wide ranging experience from his training in three different continents. Having completed his medical degree and basic surgical training in Mumbai, India, he acquired higher training in his specialty in Sheffield. Besides this, Mr Tamhankar spent two years as a Foregut Fellow with Professor Tom DeMeester at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, working on reflux disease and Barrett's oesophagus. He was also a visiting fellow with Professor Takeshi Sano at the Cancer Institute Hospital, Tokyo, where he learnt the Japanese philosophy of radical oesophago-gastric cancer surgery. After concluding his specialist training in Sheffield, Mr Tamhankar completed a Laparoscopic Oesophagogastric Fellowship in Guildford, Surrey and was then appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at the Northern General Hospital. He is affiliated with the University of Sheffield as an Honorary Senior Lecturer.

Mr Tamhankar offers assessment and investigations for abdominal pain, upper GI endoscopy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (fundoplication), hernia surgery, lumps and bumps surgery, and minor and major emergency surgery. His main interest is in the field of hiatus hernia, acid-reflux disease, anti-reflux surgery, gastroscopy, Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer as well as gallstones and hernia surgery.
