Mr Hariharan graduated from the Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital in Chennai, India, in 2001. In 2002, he relocated to the United Kingdom to undertake postgraduate surgical training. He received an MD (Research) degree from Queen Mary University of London in 2008 after completing a thesis exploring indicators of pancreatic cancer in urine using proteomic techniques. He received specialty general and HPB surgical training at Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham before completing the FRCS examination in 2014 and receiving his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2016. He completed specialist HPB surgical fellowships at HPB units at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, UK, Royal London Hospital in London, UK, and a dedicated Pancreas Cancer Centre in Verona, Italy.
Mr Hariharan is passionate about quality improvement in surgery and was involved in establishing the Hot Cholecystectomy Pathway, which allows immediate/early gallbladder surgery for certain emergency cases. He also contributed to the development of an enhanced recovery programme following HPB cancer surgery to post-operative care.
