About Prof Alan Johnstone

Professor Alan Johnstone is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Aberdeen with over 20 years of experience. He is a Member of the Aberdeen Orthopaedic Network, seeing private patients at Albyn Hospital. He graduated with his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1986, followed by his registrar training in Edinburgh and Aberdeen. He served as a Senior Lecturer at Aberdeen University from 1997 to 2002 and has been a Consultant at NHS Grampian since 2002. A pioneer in his field, Professor Johnstone introduced arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and elbow to Aberdeen. His commitment to advancing orthopaedic knowledge is evident through his role as a Professor at Robert Gordon’s University and as a visiting Professor of the University of Perugia. Recognised for his innovative contributions, he was awarded the Scottish Life Sciences Innovator of the Year in 2012. Professor Johnstone's expertise includes a wide range of specialisations, including general trauma, complex upper limb injuries, pelvic and acetabular fractures, elective surgery of the upper limb, shoulder and elbow procedures, including arthroscopic shoulder surgery, and joint replacement.  His professional memberships include the Royal College of Surgeons, British Orthopaedic Association, and British Trauma Association. Beyond his clinical practice, Professor Johnstone serves as a Clinical Adviser to Orthopaedic multinational companies, showcasing his influence and leadership in the industry.
