À propos
Mr Donald McArthur is a highly experienced Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgeon, appointed in 2015 at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Scotland’s largest teaching hospital and Major Trauma Centre. A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, he is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education, regularly training junior surgeons and mentoring fellow consultants in advanced procedures.
Mr McArthur has specialist expertise in the management of biliary and gallstone disease, including laparoscopic cholecystectomy, bile duct exploration, ERCP and in treating functional gastrointestinal conditions such as hiatus hernia, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, and achalasia. He is widely recognised for his work in complex abdominal wall hernias and reconstruction, and has been an invited faculty member at international surgical conferences. His tertiary practice includes advanced incisional hernia repair and complex abdominal wall reconstruction using innovative approaches such as botox and component separation techniques.
In addition to his clinical practice, Mr McArthur plays a key role in upper GI cancer care. He is a member of the West of Scotland Upper GI Cancer MDT and serves on the Board of the National Oesophageal Cancer Charity (OCHRE), which previously funded his initiative to introduce a specialist laser at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for the palliation of oesophageal and gastric cancers. He is also highly experienced in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, with a particular interest in the endoscopic palliation of upper GI malignancies.
Alongside his subspecialty practice, Mr McArthur undertakes the full range of general surgical procedures, including open and laparoscopic hernia surgery, minor operations, and the management of skin lesions. His patient-focused approach combines clinical expertise with innovation to deliver the best possible outcomes in both elective and complex surgical care.
