Ms Minicozzi is a Clinical Reader in Colorectal Surgery at the Blizard Institute at Queen Mary University of London, and Consultant Colorectal and Peritoneal Surgeon at the Royal London Hospital - Barts Health NHS Trust. She is the lead for colorectal cancer surgery and the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT). Additionally, she leads the Multidisciplinary Peritoneal Oncology service at Barts which she established in 2020.
She completed her higher surgical training at the Verona University Hospital. Through her training, she successfully completed an International Colorectal Surgical Oncology Fellowship on Organ Preservation/Watch & Wait in rectal cancer (Sao Paolo, Brazil) and a second International Colorectal Fellowship in advanced and recurrent rectal cancer at the Karolinska Hospital (Stockholm, Sweden). In 2010, she was awarded a PhD for her work on multimodal imaging in colorectal cancer. In 2014, she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Following the completion of her general surgery training, Ms Minicozzi embarked on three Colorectal Surgery fellowships for highly specialist training in: 1) Complex colorectal cancer surgery, inflammatory bowel disease surgery, polyposis and inherited cancers at St Marks Hospital. 2) Royal College of Surgeons Fellowship in complex inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal failure surgery at the Royal London Hospital. 3) Royal College of Surgeons Fellowship in advanced minimally invasive colorectal cancer surgery at Peterborough City Hospital.
Ms Minicozzi was first appointed in 2016 as Consultant Colorectal and Peritoneal Surgeon at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester. There, she performed a high volume of complex colorectal cancer surgeries, including Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) & Heated IntraPeritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) and exenterative surgery. In 2018, Ms Minicozzi was appointed at the Royal London Hospital, where she became the colorectal Cancer and MDT Lead. Ms Minicozzi is also the GI Early diagnostic lead across Barts Health NHS Trust and represents the Trust at the North East London Cancer Alliance working group.
Ms Minicozzi’s specialist clinical and academic interests focus on colorectal cancer treatments that require innovative and advanced therapies due to their complexity. She has been responsible in establishing a CRS & HIPEC service for peritoneal metastases from colorectal and appendiceal cancer. Additionally, she has also conducted research on single cell sequencing in rectal cancer to support the Organ Preservation/Watch & Wait strategy in patients with rectal cancer who achieve a clinical complete response after neoadjuvant treatment. She is also the Principal Investigator (PI) of a national randomised trial investigating pressurised intraperitoneal aerosolised chemotherapy (PIPAC) for colorectal cancer patients with extensive peritoneal metastases that cannot be treated by conventional treatments.
Ms Minicozzi has published extensively in surgical journals and contributed to several surgical textbooks. She is an international lecturer on complex cancer surgery. Throughout her career, she has secured multiple research grants.
