Mr Alex Shearman is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon with a specialist practice dedicated to treating both adult and paediatric knee conditions. He is based at the internationally recognised Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, part of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

His clinical expertise spans the full range of knee disorders, with particular focus on joint-preserving procedures such as osteotomy and cartilage surgery, as well as sports injuries, patellofemoral (kneecap) instability, meniscal repair, and ligament reconstruction. He also manages osteoarthritis across all age groups and has specialist expertise in partial knee replacement, robotic-assisted surgery, and complex revision knee replacement.

Mr Shearman qualified in 2008 from Imperial College School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic training in London before undertaking advanced subspecialist knee fellowships at centres including Basingstoke, Imperial College London, Oxford, and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. In 2019, he was awarded the travelling fellowship by the European Society for Sports Traumatology Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy, visiting specialist centres in Brandenburg, Germany.

Before his current role in Oxford, he worked as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, where he managed complex hip and knee reconstruction cases within a tertiary referral setting.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Shearman is actively involved in research and contributes to multicentre studies funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research. He has published peer-reviewed research across a wide range of knee conditions and has co-authored educational material in the field.

He is a member of several leading professional bodies, including the British Orthopaedic Association, British Association for Surgery of the Knee, and European Society for Sports Traumatology Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
