Dr. Wendler completed her medical and anaesthetic training in Germany. She has worked in various leadership positions in both Germany and Switzerland, before being appointed as a substantive consultant anaesthetist in London in 2005. Being a fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, Dr Wendler specialises in cardio-thoracic and obstetric anesthesia; and she is the anaesthetic lead within the St George's maternal medicine team for high-risk pregnancy cases.
Renate has a strong background in quality assurance and governance, with a postgraduate degree in hospital management and having served as Deputy Medical Director from 2014 until 2020 and as Appraisal Lead for St George's University Hospitals Foundation Trust.
She also acted as the co-clinical lead for the NHS Improvement (NHSI) and Department Health (DoH) commissioned to review on maternity services, authoring both first and second Ockenden Reviews on the matter.
