In 1996, he returned to anaesthesia and was based at Wycombe Hospital before undertaking registrar training at Imperial College London. Additionally, he has completed a fellowship in neuroanesthesia. In 2003, he became a substantive consultant at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Dr Appleby is a member of the council of the Neuro Anaesthesia and Critical Care Society and has been their honorary treasurer for the past 4 years.
Outside of the hospital, his hobbies include sports, and he enjoys playing cricket and supporting Newcastle United.
He speaks English and French.
