Dr De Lacavalerie completed her medical degree at the Universidad Central of Venezuela, in 2001. She completed her initial surgical training in London and gained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, UK. She then moved to Australia and completed her specialist general surgical training in Sydney. She became a Fellow in General Surgery of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2012. She is also a full Member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ).

Dr De Lacavalerie continued her academic journey by serving as a Surgeon Scientist and higher degree studies at the University of New South Wales. In addition to these roles, she is also an Associate Investigator at the Kirby Institute where she is part of a current clinical trial on HPV related anal dysplasia

Dr De Lacavalerie's surgical expertise extends to the management of various anorectal and pelvic floor conditions, such as rectal prolapse, diverticular disease anal fissure, anal fistula, haemorrhoids, and functional disorders like obstructive defecation and faecal incontinence. She also has special interests in general and acute surgical conditions, from hernia operations to the treatment of gallstones. She has expertise in robotic surgery and minimally invasive surgery, anal cancer screening, high-resolution anoscopy, endoanal ultrasound, anal manometry and pudendal nerve latency assessments, as well as performing endoscopic interventions like gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Alongside her clinical work, Dr De Lacavalerie is an active researcher. Her current research interests surround the diagnosis, screening and treatment of HPV-related anal dysplasia and anal cancer in high risk populations. She is also the official spokesperson of Bowel Cancer Australia, here she brings awareness of bowel cancer to the community, general practitioners and other specialists.
