About Mr James Ramsden
Mr James Ramsden is a highly accomplished Consultant ENT Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, appointed in 2007. He graduated from Oxford University Medical School in 1995 and went on to pass the intercollegiate examination in otolaryngology (head and neck surgery), receiving the Royal Society of Medicine Gold Medal for outstanding performance. As an MRC-funded clinical research fellow, he completed a PhD in 2003 and is now an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford, where he supervises DPhil students in auditory neuroscience. His training includes a dedicated year at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney, specialising in the full spectrum of paediatric ENT care, from airway assessment and cleft palate clinics to paediatric voice disorders, head and neck surgery, cochlear implantation and the evaluation of profound hearing loss. A further fellowship at the University of Toronto expanded his expertise in advanced neuro-otology, with a focus on vertigo, middle ear disease and hearing loss. While in Toronto, he was appointed to the Hospital for Sick Children, where he specialised in paediatric ENT conditions, particularly deafness and cochlear implantation. Mr Ramsden’s current practice spans both adult and paediatric ENT. He performs more than 40 cochlear implant surgeries annually, along with bone anchored hearing aid implantation and a high volume of major ear operations. His expertise also includes tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy and grommet insertion for children. He consults at the Nuffield Manor Hospital and provides ENT care for Oxford Children’s Hospital, including treatment of premature babies and neonates with ENT conditions. Alongside his clinical work, Mr Ramsden plays a leading role in surgical education. He is the ENT Training Programme Director for Thames Valley and serves as Head of the School of Surgery for NHS Education, overseeing surgical training across the region. He has contributed to several national bodies, including NHS England’s Specialised Ear Surgery advisory group, the British Association of Paediatric Otolaryngologists council, and the Specialist Advisory Committee for ENT at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
