From 2006 to 2013, she practised as a Consultant General and Upper GI Laparoscopic Surgeon in Spain before relocating to the UK.
Miss Spanu expanded her subspecialty expertise through fellowships in London, including hepatobiliary, pancreatic and liver transplant surgery at the Royal Free Hospital (2011–2012) and trauma, emergency and endocrine surgery at King’s College Hospital (2013–2014). She also trained in laparoscopic bariatric surgery at Whittington Hospital.
At North Middlesex University Hospital, she has been instrumental in developing the Emergency Surgery Unit and leads a high-volume “hot gallbladder” service for urgent and elective cholecystectomy. Her clinical interests include upper GI benign biliary disease, advanced laparoscopic surgery, abdominal wall hernia repair (including complex reconstructions) and benign perianal conditions.
In addition to her NHS role, Miss Spanu is an Assistant Professor in Surgery at St George’s University, Grenada, and trains future surgeons as a clinical and educational supervisor with University College London.
