Dr Gopalakrishnan Venkat-Raman is a consultant nephrologist working out of Portsmouth (Spire Hospital), Guildford (Royal Surrey County Hospital) and London. He has worked as a consultant since 1985 and specialises in all aspects of kidney disease including diabetic kidney disease, glomerulonephritis, autoimmune renal disease, drug-induced kidney disorders, and genetic kidney disorders. His major subspecialist interest is hypertension, and he has particular expertise in managing various forms of hypertension including monogenic hypertension, accelerated and refractory hypertension. Due to his expertise, he was elected a fellow of the British Hypertension Society and of the High Blood Pressure Council of the American Heart Association.
Dr Venkat-Raman is committed to working to the highest of standards and takes a holistic approach to patient care. He focuses particularly on achieving an accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment and resolution. Dr Venkat-Raman has an interest in research, particularly in the genetics of kidney disease. He also has experience in medico-legal work and has been providing reports for medical litigation for over 35 years.
Dr Venkat-Raman gained his medical qualifications in 1972 from the University of Poona (India) before going on to achieve an MD in 1975 from the University of Delhi. After moving to the UK in 1979, he obtained the MRCP in 1980 and earned the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 1992.
Dr Venkat-Raman worked as a Consultant Nephrologist and Physician for the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust from 1985 until 2016, during which he was also appointed Honorary Senior Lecturer to the Universities of Southampton and Brighton. He had strong affiliations to the Royal College of Ohysicians as one of their senior officers and examiners. He also served as a Clinical Adviser to the Parliamentary & Health Service Ombudsman for 7 years. He was nominated Clinical Hypertension Specialist by the European Society of Hypertension, elected to the High Blood Pressure Council of the American Heart Association and a Fellow of the British & Irish Society of Hypertension. He has been a long standing member of the International Society of Nephrology and the European Renal Association.
Dr Venkat-Raman continues to undertake private medical practice and medicolegal practice in his specialist fields of Nephrology and Hypertension, as well as working part-time for the NHS in the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford and Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.
