Dr. Rhys David Russell Evans is an Associate Professor of Renal Medicine and a Consultant Nephrologist, currently based at the UCL Centre for Kidney and Bladder Health, Royal Free Hospital. He serves as the Clinical Lead for Kidney Transplantation.
He studied medicine at Cambridge University and University College London Medical School, qualifying in 2007. He undertook general medical training in London and Melbourne, Australia, before completing specialty training in Nephrology within the North Thames training scheme. In 2021, he completed a fellowship in transplantation at the University of British Columbia, Canada.
Dr. Evans’ clinical practice includes the investigation and management of acute and chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and transplantation. His sub-specialty expertise is in transplantation and tubular kidney diseases. As clinical lead, his transplant work spans donor and recipient assessment as well as post-transplant care. He is also principal investigator on multiple clinical trials, including studies into cardiac screening for transplant recipients, treatments for delayed graft function, and therapies for chronic rejection.
He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK), the British Transplantation Society, the European Society for Organ Transplantation, and the International Society of Nephrology.
Dr. Evans was awarded a PhD from UCL for translational work investigating the impact of salt on the immune system, which included the first description of immunodeficiency in patients with inherited salt-losing tubulopathies. He continues to research immune function in tubular kidney disease and hypertension and leads a research group focused on precision medicine approaches to transplant care. He was awarded the UCL Oliver Wrong Prize for his contribution to renal physiology research in 2021. 
Alongside his UK-based academic and clinical work, Dr. Evans has contributed to kidney care in low-resource settings. He has worked as a clinical lecturer at the University of Malawi and has published research on the epidemiology of kidney disease in Africa and the use of novel diagnostic tools in these contexts.
