Dr Dayavathi Ashok is a Lead Consultant Rheumatologist based in Essex, with a specialist interest in early arthritis, connective tissue disease, and a broad range of musculoskeletal disorders. She has extensive expertise in managing conditions including soft tissue rheumatism, osteoarthritis, neck and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, osteoporosis, gout, polymyalgia rheumatica, temporal arteritis, and chronic pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia.
In her clinical practice, Dr Ashok performs joint aspirations and injections of the knee, ankle, shoulder, and wrist, as well as a wide range of soft tissue injections. These include treatments for tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, trochanteric bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and trigger finger, allowing her to provide comprehensive, hands-on care tailored to individual patient needs.
Dr Ashok completed her undergraduate and postgraduate training in General Medicine in India before moving to the UK in 2000. She undertook senior house officer training mainly in and around London and completed her MRCP in 2002. Her specialist training in Rheumatology and General (Internal) Medicine was completed through the Oxford Deanery in 2008. In July 2017, she was appointed as a substantive Consultant Rheumatologist at Mid and South Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust in Chelmsford, where her NHS base is Broomfield Hospital. Prior to this, she spent nine years as a substantive Consultant Rheumatologist at County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, where she led the Early Arthritis Service.
Alongside her clinical work, Dr Ashok takes keen role in postgraduate medical education and working as a Foundation Programme Tutor. She served as MRCP Regional Lead for North-East England during 2016–2017. She is an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and a member of the Scenario Editorial Committee for the MRCP membership examination.
Dr Ashok is also actively involved in research and acts as a principal investigator for several multicentre clinical trials within the NIHR portfolio. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a member of the General Medical Council, the National Osteoporosis Society, and the Indo-UK Rheumatology Society.
