In 2003 he completed his MD in Neurosurgery and became certified by the German Board for Neurosurgery.

In 2006, he moved to the UAE and practiced at Tawam Hospital as the Head of the Neurosurgery Department for 11 years. During this time, Dr El Shawarbi became the Medical Director for Neuroscience at SEHA. As Medical Director, he pioneered skull base surgery, complex spine surgery, paediatric neurosurgery, neuromodulation and established SEHA's first stroke program.
Dr El Shawarbi specialises in the diagnosis and surgical treatment and management of conditions of the brain and spine in both adults and children.
