Mr David Nasralla is the Clinical Lead for the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary and Liver Transplant service at the Royal Free Hospital, London, having been appointed as a consultant there in 2019. He is an expert in the treatment of complex benign and malignant conditions affecting the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder, and receives referrals from across the United Kingdom and beyond.
The diseases that he most commonly treats are:
- Pancreas cancer (adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine tumours, cholangiocarcinoma and pancreatic metastases) including with vascular reconstruction
- Benign/premalignant conditions of the pancreas (pancreatitis, IPMN, mucinous cystic neoplasms, pseudocysts and others)
- Liver cancers (intra-hepatic cholangiocarcinoma, hilar cholangicarcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, liver metastases from a range of primary tumours, neuroendocrine tumours and others) including with vascular reconstruction
- Benign conditions of the liver (liver cysts, cavernous haemangiomas and others)
- Gallbladder cancer
- Benign gallbladder disease (the full spectrum of gallstone disease and its related complications, complications following cholecystectomy, bile duct injury and reconstruction, gallbladder polyps and more)
- Abdominal wall hernias
- Emergency abdominal surgery
- Liver transplant surgery
Mr Nasralla studied medicine and received his PhD from Oxford University Medical School. His doctoral research looked into a method of keeping the liver alive outside the body (normothermic liver perfusion) in order to increase its transplantation readiness. He has won numerous national and international honours for his work, including the International Liver Transplantation Society's Rising Star Award. The British Transplantation Society awarded him the coveted Medawar Medal, and he is frequently requested to give presentations at international surgical conferences. His work has also appeared on the covers of Nature, BBC Radio 4's Inside Health, and the BBC Two television series Hospital.
Mr Nasralla is a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the UK and Ireland HPB Association, the British Transplantation Society, and the International Liver Transplantation Society. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
