Mr Jonathan Chan is an Edinburgh-based consultant ophthalmic surgeon with more than 27 years of Consultant experience in the field. He works at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Royal Edinburgh Infirmary, and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Young People. He also has a private practice at Shawfair Park Hospital. Mr Chan specialises in cataract surgery and multifocal lens implantation. He also has a specialist interest in paediatric ocular and neuro-ophthalmological conditions such as lazy eye, sticky eye and squint, as well as rarer conditions such as infantile cataracts and retinopathy of prematurity. He performs around 30–40 squint operations each year and has performed more than 9,000 adult cataract operations with high success rates.

Mr Chan completed his general ophthalmic training in Dublin, Cambridge, Aberdeen, and Sheffield. During this time, he became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London and Ireland. He went on to complete subspecialty training in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at University College of Los Angeles, USA.

Mr Chan is actively involved in training, teaching, and research, and he has published more than 50 papers in international, peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He is also a senior examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and an honorary senior lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of Edinburgh.
