He was awarded an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship in 2005 and later undertook a PhD at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, where he studied the spatiotemporal patterns of mitochondrial function.
He is currently chair of the UK Cardio-Oncology Consortium and a member of the Heart Failure Association Translational Research Committee.
