About
He has considerable experience in general adult cardiology with expertise in pulmonary hypertension and unexplained breathlessness, cardiovascular prevention, high blood pressure, heart failure, chest pain, palpitation and dizzy turns.
He is a tutor and examiner at UCL, he serves on the selection panel for UCL Medical School and King's College School of Medicine, and is an expert adviser to NICE, the Medical Research Council, and an appointed reviewer of papers submitted to the European Society of Cardiology; his opinion is sought in complex medico-legal cases.
Professor Handler was educated at Dulwich College and qualified in medicine from Guy's Hospital Medical School where he also did an Honours BSc degree in pharmacology. He trained in general medicine and cardiology at the Royal Brompton, London Chest, Charing Cross, Guy's, and University College and the Middlesex Hospitals, and did additional training in cardiology in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has longstanding links with Yale University School of Medicine.
Professor Handler was awarded an MRC Fellowship to do an intercalated degree in Pharmacology at Guy's Hospital Medical School, University of London and was an MRC Fellow at Guy's Hospital, where he was awarded his MD degree for his research thesis on exercise testing after heart attacks.
He is an elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
Professor Handler is a founder member and committee member of the UCL/King's/ Queen Mary's faculty for the annual cardiovascular biology conference at the Royal College of Physicians and the Founder and Chairman of the St Paul's School Medical Conference for widening participation in medicine.
He is a member of the British Cardiovascular Society and Physicians group of the UK and Ireland Pulmonary Hypertension Society. He is also a member of the FLARRE research cross-faculty research group at UCL and active in clinical research trials and a member of an international safety and clinical events committee for drug trials.
Professor Handler is the author or editor of 13 textbooks for scientists, students, GPs and patients, he has written numerous scientific papers and is a Freeman of the City of London.
