About Mr Tomas Madura
I am a Consultant Hand, Plastic and Peripheral Nerve Surgeon based in Birmingham, UK, specialising in the treatment of common and complex conditions affecting the hand and peripheral nerves. With over 25 years of surgical experience and a PhD in Neurobiology, my practice combines advanced surgical expertise with a strong scientific understanding of nerve repair, microsurgery and functional reconstruction. I treat both routine hand problems and complex nerve injuries, helping patients restore movement, sensation and confidence in daily life. My main areas of expertise include: Hand conditions • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Cubital Tunnel Syndrome • Trigger Finger • Dupuytren’s Contracture • Hand arthritis • Hand trauma and fractures • Tendon injuries • Complex hand and upper limb reconstruction Peripheral nerve conditions • Trapped/ Pinched / Compressed nerves • Peripheral nerve injuries • Nerve tumours • Brachial plexus injuries • Acute and chronic nerve pain • Muscle paralysis and functional loss • Headaches caused by nerve compression I use high-precision microsurgical techniques to restore movement and sensation wherever possible. My specialist treatments include nerve reconstruction, nerve transfers, tendon transfers, and advanced procedures for nerve pain such as Targeted Muscle Reinnervation — TMR. My clinical background includes Specialist Plastic Surgery training in Manchester between 2006 and 2016, a PhD in Neurobiology at Osaka University in Japan, and a fellowship in the reconstructive treatment of brachial plexus paralysis at a world-renowned centre in Japan. This fellowship focused on advanced Japanese microsurgical techniques for restoring function after nerve injury and paralysis. I also completed a Peripheral Nerve and Hand Surgery fellowship at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and hold the Postgraduate Diploma in Hand Surgery from the British Society for Surgery of the Hand — BSSH. I now serve as a Tutor for the British Diploma in Hand Surgery, helping to train future hand surgery specialists. Alongside my clinical work, I am a published academic surgeon with contributions to leading international journals and conferences. My research, summarised on my Google Scholar profile, focuses on nerve recovery, microsurgery and reconstructive surgery. This academic background supports my evidence-based approach to treating both common hand conditions and the most complex nerve injuries. I also serve as a National Specialist Adviser to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence — NICE, where I contribute to the development of national standards in peripheral nerve surgery. This role reflects my commitment to improving access to safe, effective and evidence-based treatments for patients across the UK. I currently practise at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, one of Europe’s largest specialist centres for hand and peripheral nerve surgery. Working within this major centre allows me to offer patients access to world-class facilities, multidisciplinary expertise and advanced reconstructive care. My work includes treating high numbers of major trauma and military cases involving complex limb reconstruction, hand and upper limb reconstruction, and peripheral nerve injury management. This experience has given me extensive expertise in managing severe injuries, complex functional loss and challenging reconstructive problems. My goal is to provide expert, personalised care for every patient. Whether treating a common hand condition such as carpal tunnel syndrome or a complex nerve injury requiring advanced reconstruction, I aim to combine surgical precision, academic insight and compassionate care to help patients regain function and quality of life.
