Dr. Salman Waqar is an experienced consultant ophthalmic surgeon specialising in glaucoma (adult and paediatrics) and cataract surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital in Dubai Healthcare City. He has over 15 years of experience working in the United Kingdom. He holds a Certificate of Completion of Training from the UK, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists London and on the General Medical Council UK's Specialist Register. Dr. Waqar has worked in various prestigious eye units including the West of England Eye Unit where he completed his sub-specialty training in glaucoma.
Dr. Waqar’s clinical expertise includes medical, laser, and surgical treatments for glaucoma using minimally invasive implants and aqueous shunt devices. He offers cataract surgery using the latest small incision technology and a range of intraocular lenses tailored to the patients' individual needs. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Waqar’s research interests include developing innovative surgical instruments to improve patient safety, using virtual reality simulation to investigate surgeon performance, and optimising patient outcomes with minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Waqar has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has presented regularly at national and international meetings. He is a member of various ophthalmology societies including the United Kingdom and Eire Glaucoma Society, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Emirates Society of Ophthalmology. As an Honorary Fellow with Plymouth University UK, he has been involved in training future doctors and surgeons. He has also received numerous research grants, co-authored four medical textbooks, and been recognized with a nomination for a regional Trainer of the Year Award. He continues this excellent work as an Associate Professor (Adjunct) at the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dubai.
His passion for patient safety is reflected in his work as Clinical Governance Lead both in the UK and at Moorfields Dubai, where he is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of patient care are maintained. This is also evident in his own clinical practice, which he regularly audits to confirm his surgical outcomes consistently meet the best international standards.
With a keen enthusiasm for aviation medicine, he is also an accredited Specialist Aeromedical Examiner for the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the UAE.
In keeping with his firm belief that patients interests are best served when doctors are involved in leadership roles, he has previously served as Director for the Virtual Glaucoma Service at the Royal Eye Infirmary (Plymouth, UK) and is currently Chair of the Infection Control Committee at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai.
