About Prof Pallav Shah
Professor Pallav Shah is a leading UK respiratory physician and interventional pulmonologist, specialising in minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of lung disease and lung cancer. He is a Consultant Physician at Royal Brompton Hospital NHS Trust and also practises privately at One Welbeck. He is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London, and leads lung cancer and bronchoscopy services at the Royal Brompton Hospital. Professor Shah qualified from Guy's Hospital Medical School in 1989 and completed specialist respiratory training at the Royal Brompton Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. Over more than 25 years as a consultant, he has become internationally recognised for advancing interventional bronchoscopy and transforming the way lung diseases — particularly lung cancer — are diagnosed and treated. Pioneer of Robotic Bronchoscopy Professor Shah is one of the principal innovators responsible for introducing robotic bronchoscopy into UK clinical practice. He performed the first UK procedures using the Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy platform and has led major clinical studies demonstrating its ability to reach very small, hard-to-access lung nodules. The technology allows clinicians to navigate deep into the lung with microscopic precision, enabling earlier diagnosis and potentially curative treatment. His work has shown robotic bronchoscopy can safely biopsy lesions only a few millimetres in size and access areas previously unreachable with conventional bronchoscopy, representing a major shift in early lung cancer detection and management. He is now developing robotic-guided therapies, including bronchoscopic ablation of peripheral lung tumours — a minimally invasive alternative to surgery or radiotherapy designed to treat cancer at its earliest stage. Interventional Pulmonology and Novel Therapies Professor Shah has pioneered multiple bronchoscopic treatments now used internationally, including: • Endobronchial valves and coils for emphysema • Vapour therapy and Aeriseal sealant lung volume reduction • Targeted lung denervation for COPD • Cryospray and pulsed electrical field therapy for chronic bronchitis • Bronchial thermoplasty for severe asthma • Advanced endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and navigational bronchoscopy for lung cancer diagnosis He also developed techniques for fiducial marker placement and minimally invasive tumour debulking and ablation, forming a comprehensive bronchoscopic treatment pathway for patients unsuitable for conventional surgery. Research, Education and Leadership Professor Shah leads research into next-generation bronchoscopic technologies and training simulators, and teaches interventional bronchoscopy internationally. He serves as a specialist adviser to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and has advised the Commission on Human Medicines on treatment safety and policy. He has authored more than 300 scientific publications and several textbooks, including editorial roles in Gray’s Anatomy and the Oxford Textbook of Medicine. Summary Professor Shah is widely regarded as a pioneer of modern interventional pulmonology. His introduction of robotic bronchoscopy and development of robotic-guided lung tumour ablation mark a shift toward incision-free, lung-preserving cancer treatment — moving lung cancer care from late detection to early, curative intervention.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
