About Prof Michael Loebinger
Professor Michael Loebinger is a Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Royal Brompton Hospital, where he leads the lung division, and Professor of Practice (Respiratory Medicine) at Imperial College, London. Professor Loebinger undertook his preclinical studies at Cambridge University gaining a First Class Honours in Medical Sciences followed by study at Oxford University for his clinical studies. He was then awarded a Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellowship for studies into the use of adult stem cells in lung disease. This resulted in research published in his PhD, which he was awarded by University College London. His clinical interests cover all respiratory medicine, however he has particular interest and expertise in respiratory infection. His clinical expertise has led to multiple invitations to give lectures on these conditions nationally and internationally and his central involvement in shaping national services and guidelines. Professor Loebinger co-chaired the National bronchiectasis guidelines and co-wrote the European bronchiectasis guidelines and National non-tuberculous mycobacteria guidelines. He chaired the British Thoracic Society Specialist Advisory Group for respiratory infections (2013-2016) and was secretary and then chair of the European Respiratory Society respiratory infection group (2017 - 2023). He has helped set up national and European research networks, with funding to produce clinical bronchiectasis databases and is the recipient of several prestigious research grants. He also collaborates with Industry and is global, national and site principal investigator of multicentre international clinical trials. He has won young investigator of the year awards from the Royal Society of Medicine, the European Respiratory Society, the British Thoracic Society and the British Association of Lung Research. In addition, he has won prestigious awards from the American Thoracic Society, the Medical Research Society and the British Lung Foundation and was awarded the European Respiratory Society research award for innovation in non-tuberculous mycobacteria in 2018. He has been awarded NHS National Clinical Impact and National Clinical Excellence Awards. He has published over 200 articles listed on https://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/m.loebinger/publications.html
