About

Miss Carol Tan is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at Guys's Hospital in London. She was previously a Consultant at St George's Hospital and Honorary Consultant at Royal Marsden Hospital in London, UK. She qualified from the University of Bristol in 1997. Following the completion of basic surgical training she went to train in cardiothoracic surgery at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital, and the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals. Her research was predominantly focused on pleural disease and she was involved in the UK multi centre MARS (Mesothelioma and Radical Surgery) trial, and is currently a member of the Trial Steering Committee for the MARS 2 Trial.

She was awarded the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery (SCTS) Scholarship for Thoracic Surgery and visited three large thoracic units in USA in 2009. She joined St George's Hospital as a consultant thoracic surgeon that same year, and subsequently was made Clinical Lead in the department. In 2023, she decided to return to her alma mater, Guy's Hospital, which is one of the largest Thoracic Surgical units in the UK.

She has a particular interest in minimally invasive surgery including Robotic surgery, chest wall resection and reconstruction, thoracic oncology, pleural disease, pneumothorax, clinical trials and research. She has been heavily involved with NTN training in the UK as SCTS Thoracic Surgical Tutor in 2017 to 2020, and SCTS Education Secretary (2020 to 2022). She continues to be active within the SCTS and organises the thoracic programme for the annual scientific meeting as the Deputy Meeting Secretary.

She sees private patients at Cleveland Clinic London.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
