Mr Chandra Cheruvu is a Consultant Laparoscopic and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon based in North Staffordshire. He qualified in Medicine in 1984 and went on to complete higher surgical training at St George’s University Hospital in London, followed by further specialist training at St James’ University Hospital in Leeds. He later undertook a fellowship in bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgery in Liverpool, and through a Royal College of Surgeons scholarship completed additional surgical fellowships at the National Cancer Centre in Japan and the Royal Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, developing expertise in minimally invasive surgery for both benign and complex upper gastrointestinal and bariatric conditions.
He has been performing laparoscopic surgery since the early 1990s and has carried out more than 5,000 laparoscopic operations, including procedures for gallbladder disease, hernias, reflux disease, abdominal wall defects and bariatric surgery. His clinical practice encompasses laparoscopic cholecystectomy, inguinal and abdominal wall hernia repair, anti-reflux surgery, splenectomy, gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and revision bariatric procedures. He also manages benign oesophageal disorders such as reflux disease, giant hiatus hernias and achalasia, and has a specialist interest in diagnostic and therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Since 2025, his practice has included the LIRA procedure for complex incisional hernias.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Cheruvu has made significant academic and educational contributions. He has delivered more than 200 presentations at professional meetings, published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery, and contributed chapters to surgical textbooks. He has delivered invited lectures at national and international scientific meetings and is recognised as a trainer in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. His techniques have been demonstrated through live televised operations at major surgical conferences. At the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, he has played a central role in establishing and expanding advanced laparoscopic and bariatric services.
