He further enhanced his expertise by completing the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) in Ophthalmology and obtaining a Fellowship from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth.) in London. Recently, he spent a year working at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and STARS in Brisbane, Australia, further expanding his international experience.

He has performed nearly 10,000 cataract surgeries and is a renowned trainer on the Microsurgical Skills Course for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Mr. Varma also co-organises the Advanced Phaco Study Day for trainees and leads the Cataract Advanced Training and Simulation course. He is a regular speaker at national and international conferences, including the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS). He has co-authored several research papers published in international journals and has contributed presentations, posters, and videos at various ophthalmology conferences.

In his private practice, Mr. Varma offers a comprehensive range of services, using the latest surgical techniques and intraocular lenses, some of which are not available on the NHS. He is also involved in charitable initiatives, having contributed his surgical skills to the Khmer Sight Foundation in Cambodia, helping provide sight-saving surgeries to underserved communities.
