About Mr Arthur Okonkwo
Mr Arthur Okonkwo is an internationally trained Consultant Ophthalmologist at Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust. He has over 10 years’ experience with advanced subspecialty certification in cataract surgery (astigmatism correction, toric lenses and premium IOLs), laser eye surgery and corneal transplantation (DSO/DWEK, DMEK, DSAEK, DALK, PKP and Amniotic Membrane Transplantation). Mr Okonkwo offers expert diagnosis and surgical care for a wide range of complex corneal, cataract, refractive and external eye conditions including dry eye, Fuch’s endothelial dystrophy, keratoconus/crosslinking and pterygium. Mr Okonkwo provides cutting-edge individualised care to patients having undergone fellowship training at internationally renowned centres including Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne. Mr Okonkwo graduated with distinction from Newcastle University with a medical degree and Masters by Research in Transplant Sciences. He then completed clinical academic training in Ophthalmology in Yorkshire and Manchester achieving over 30 research publications and over £250,000 worth of national and international research funding. Mr Okonkwo is trained to the highest standard with a diploma with distinction in cataract and refractive surgery from Ulster University and the Certificate of Laser and Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Additionally, he also lectures in refractive surgery at the University of Manchester and writes for the Certificate of Laser and Refractive Surgery examination. Mr Okonkwo is honoured to be part of Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust, the largest teaching hospital in Europe! He is passionate about improving vision and restoring ocular comfort through educating patients about their options and using advanced, evidence-based techniques to deliver the best possible outcomes. Mr Okonkwo is friendly, approachable and highly rated by patients and colleagues. He combined his medical training with a non-league football career captaining Newcastle University before representing Wythenshawe AFC and Grimsby Borough. He has also won two Medical Football World Championships playing for Great Britain.
