About

Mr. John Swan is an accomplished Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the treatment of conditions affecting the shoulder, forearm, hip, and knee. He operates privately at Knox Private Hospital and offers consultations at Victorian Orthopaedic Associates, where he handles urgent referrals, including Workcover, TAC, DVA, private, and uninsured patients.

Mr. Swan earned his medical degree from the University of Melbourne and completed his orthopaedic training in Victoria. He is a fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association. Following his fellowship, he served as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Box Hill Hospital and the Northern Hospital, where he managed both elective upper and lower limb conditions as well as orthopaedic trauma.

To further enhance his expertise, Dr. Swan undertook additional fellowship training in shoulder and knee sports injuries and joint replacements at Clinique Des Cedres in Grenoble, France, under the guidance of Dr. Johannes Barth. He also completed a clinical fellowship at L’Hopital de la Croix Rousse in Lyon, France, with Professor Sebastien Lustig, focusing on arthroscopic, robotic-assisted, and complex revision surgeries of the shoulder and lower limbs.

Upon returning to Australia, Dr. Swan received further training in anterior minimally invasive hip replacement surgery and is proficient in performing both primary and revision hip replacement surgeries. His extensive experience includes the supervision of orthopaedic registrars and international fellows. Dr. Swan holds a Master of Surgery by Research from the University of Melbourne and has been awarded multiple research scholarships. He has authored over 35 original research publications and contributed to six book chapters on shoulder and knee surgery.

Dr. Swan is affiliated with several professional organisations, including the Royal Australian College of Surgeons, the Australian Orthopaedic Association, the Victorian Shoulder and Elbow Society, and the Australian Medical Association. His practice encompasses a wide range of conditions, including shoulder joint replacement (both anatomic and reverse), rotator cuff tears, shoulder stabilization, shoulder dislocation and labral tears, biceps tendon rupture, upper limb fractures, carpal tunnel release, hip and knee joint replacement, radio frequency ablation, sporting injuries of the knee (including multi-ligament and ACL injuries), knee arthroscopy, total and partial knee arthroplasty, and general orthopaedic trauma.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
