About
He graduated in medicine from University College Hospital, London, before undertaking higher surgical training in London at University College Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital, St Bartholomew’s Hospital and The Royal London Hospital. To further enhance his laparoscopic HPB expertise, he completed additional training at the Mayo Clinic, USA.
Appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in Oxford in 2016, Mr Bond-Smith established and now leads the complex abdominal wall reconstruction service at Oxford University Hospitals. This service manages all types of abdominal wall hernias, including incisional, inguinal, femoral, spigelian and umbilical hernias, frequently using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques.
In his role as an emergency general surgeon, he treats a wide range of acute abdominal conditions such as appendicitis, abscesses and obstructed hernias. His HPB practice includes the management of gallstone disease, cholecystitis, biliary and pancreatic disorders. He is also experienced in lipoma and sebaceous cyst excision. In the NHS, Mr Giles Bond-Smith is one of the few surgeons in the UK to use laser to treat troublesome gallstones that have slipped into the wrong part of the liver drainage system (LABEL Procedure.)
Mr Bond-Smith’s practice integrates emergency surgery, HPB procedures and advanced abdominal wall reconstruction.
Mr Bond-Smith is the current Clinical Director for Surgery, Oncology and Women's Health at the John Radcliffe, Oxford University Hospitals and holds the position of FInance Director for Association of Surgeons for Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), Regional Ambassador for the Royal Collge of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) and is the current secretary for National Forum for Acute Surgery (NFAS.)
He has special interests in Surgical Site Outcomes, Innovation and Medical Education. He is also a Teaching Associate at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.
