About Miss Emily Shao
Miss Emily Shao is a skilled ophthalmologist. She graduated from Imperial College London and her postgraduate medical and surgical training took place at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London, during which she received the Outstanding Contribution Foundation Merit Award in 2012 from West London Deanery. She then pursued a career in Ophthalmic Surgery, completing her Ophthalmic Surgical Training in the UK. Throughout her training, Miss Shao earned multiple accolades, including Trainee Researcher of the Year 2017 by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), as well as awards for presentations in Paris and within the KSS Deanery School of Ophthalmology. Subsequently, Miss Shao undertook advanced subspecialty training in vitreoretinal surgery at the esteemed Sydney Eye Hospital, learning from leading surgeons in the field. Her expertise led to her appointment as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in August 2020. Miss Shao's clinical practice encompasses general ophthalmic care, with a particular focus on diseases of the retina and vitreoretinal and cataract surgeries. She has contributed to peer-reviewed journals, co-authored book chapters, and presented her work both nationally and internationally. Her specific interests include routine and complex vitreoretinal surgeries for conditions such as macular holes, epiretinal membranes, retinal detachments, vitreous haemorrhage, vitreomacular traction, and floaters. She also specialises in routine and complex cataract surgeries, as well as combined cataract-vitrectomy surgeries. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a member of the British and Eire Association of Vitreo Retinal Surgeons, European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and European Society of Retina Specialists.
