About Prof Daniel Forton
Professor Daniel Forton is a highly respected London-based Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist, specialising in diseases of the liver and gastrointestinal system. He holds appointments at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and City St George's, University of London. Professor Forton’s clinical expertise covers the medical and endoscopic management of liver, pancreaticobiliary and digestive disorders. He is an accomplished endoscopist, performing a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography), as well as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy. Known for his patient-centred approach, Professor Forton takes time to listen carefully to his patients, seeking to understand their symptoms and concerns in detail. His aim is always to reach an accurate diagnosis and provide the most effective, evidence-based treatment while ensuring patients feel informed, supported, and at ease throughout their care. He is also frequently consulted for second opinions on complex cases. After qualifying in Medicine from University College London in 1993, Professor Forton completed specialist training across leading London teaching hospitals. He undertook significant clinical and scientific research in viral hepatitis, earning his PhD from Imperial College London and the Dame Sheila Sherlock Research Medal for outstanding research in liver disease.. He was appointed as a Consultant in 2005, awarded a Professorship in 2021, and now brings decades of experience managing both common and complex gastrointestinal and liver conditions. Professor Forton has held several senior leadership positions, including Clinical Director for Acute Medicine and Associate Medical Director for Research at St George’s Hospital. In these roles, he established and now directs the St George’s NIHR Clinical Research Facility. He currently serves as Director of the South West London Hepatitis C Operational Delivery Network and leads an innovative community liver health programme, using mobile FibroScan technology to identify and assess liver disease in community populations. This initiative aims to improve early diagnosis and access to specialist care for individuals at risk of chronic liver conditions. A passionate advocate for evidence-based medicine, Professor Forton continues to lead and collaborate on clinical trials of novel treatments across a range of liver diseases, ensuring his patients benefit from the latest medical advances.
